The Witch by Edilberto K. Tiempo

Analysis

A twelve year old boy went to Libas, where Minggay Awok, the speculated as a notorious witch, lived. She lived in a small low hut nearby the creek separating the barrios of Libas and Sinit-an. Her strange apperance and solitary life feared people of Libas and the sorrounding Barrios. Whenever strange things happened, they always blame to her. They tried to murder her in oder to stop the curse of allegedly place on them but in mysterious ways, she always come out unharmed. One day, a boy who sometimes visit his Uncle he met the old woman while fishing in the creek. She had been considerate to direct him to spot where he can get shrimps. They talk for a while until the boy finally realized that the mere old lady was the witch that everyone is talking about. He emmediately walked away and detached the string of shrimps from his belt except for the three for those are not belonged to Minggay. Angrily he throw away those shrips back in the river.

Characters: 

Minggay Awok- she was suspected as the witch in the short story. 

Boy- the obidient lad. 

Tio Sabelo- the head teacher of the school Barrio 

Setting: 

 Barrrio of Libas (Southern Leyte, Philippines)

Central Conflict:  The central conflict of the short story is man versus man. Because the story is all about Minggay Awok, the witch, and the main opposition is the people who suspected her as the witch.

Theme: 

The "witch" is not all we hear or see is true. we cannot simply judge a thing by looking at it through our eyes. Not all stories we heard are true, some of it were just rumours, we cannot just believe a thing without reasonable proof.

✔Do you think Minggay is really a witch? why and why not? Explain your answer.

●I think Minggay is not a witch . She's just a mere old woman living alone near the creek. Not all the information stated are true, majority of it were just rumours. 

✔Explain what is the relationship between the boy and Minggay. 

●The boy is protagonist while Minggay is the antagonist

✔Explain the difference of a short story to othet forms of literature like poetry, drama and essay etc...

●Short story ussually focuses on a single event and deals with only few characters. It is shorter and less elaborate than a novel. A short story is often a narrative. Short stories are fiction while drama is describing a true story. Short story is often in a narrative format while the essay is descriptive.
